The Ache is the Beginning

Love doesn’t always begin with fireworks or fairy-tale kisses. Sometimes, it begins with an ache. A quiet longing. A sense that something is missing, even when life appears full.

That ache—the tug in your chest when a memory hits, the silence after a goodbye, the yearning for someone who doesn’t yet exist or who’s been lost along the way—isn’t weakness. It’s the birthplace of every love story that matters.

In rural towns, the ones I love to write about, the ache shows up in the stillness of a wheat field at sunset. It’s in a message never sent, the photo tucked away in a drawer, the way someone says, “He used to sit right there.” The ache reminds us we’re human. It reminds us we care.

Romance, real and fictional, often starts with that ache. Not with the lovers meeting, but with their hearts already bruised. That ache is the invitation—to hope again, to risk again, to love again.

In my stories, it’s the woman staring out the window of her childhood home, wondering if she’ll ever feel whole again. It’s the man who returns to his family's farm to carry on the expectation of the family legacy only to find his heart waking up. And maybe, it’s also you, reading this, remembering a love you once had or still hope for.

So let the ache rise. Let it stretch out and remind you: The story isn’t over. The ache is just the beginning.
