The Enduring Nature of Childhood Dreams of Love

When we were young, love was simple — but it was never small.

The beauty of childhood love.
The beauty of childhood love.

We dreamed of fairytale endings, of someone who’d understand our quietest thoughts, of kisses in the rain, and handwritten letters folded into hearts. Our dolls and stick-figure drawings may have looked childish, but our hopes for connection were already deeply human.

Those dreams? They don’t leave us. They evolve.

As adults, we often laugh at our childhood notions of love. But beneath the surface, they still guide us. We might no longer believe in glass slippers or white horses, but we do long for someone who sees us — really sees us. We crave love that feels safe, steady, and soul-deep.

In my writing, I return to those early hopes. I write for the girl who looked out her window and imagined someone waiting in the driveway. For the one who believed love could fix broken things — and maybe, in a way, still does.

Because real love, even with its mess and complexity, still carries a trace of the magic we once believed in.

So maybe our childhood dreams weren’t naive — maybe they were a blueprint. Not for perfection, but for meaning.

And if we still carry those dreams with us now… maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
